Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor, Sr. hailed the farmers for being the backbone of the economy of the province and the country as a whole. Defensor made the statement during the 11th Provincial Farmers Congress held in Cabatuan, Iloilo on Thursday, March 10, 2016, where around 2,500 farmers were in attendance.
He noted that Iloilo is basically an agricultural province thus there is a need to support the farmers in order to sustain agricultural production. Defensor stressed that having grown up in the farm in his hometown Mina, he understands their needs and as well as their aspirations in life. In his speech,
Defensor also announced that the ground breaking for the much-awaited Jalaur River Multi-purpose Project (JRMP) is already set on March 28, 2016. He said the project is a “game changer” in the agricultural situation of the province since it will irrigate more than 30,000 hectares of farm lands.
Through the said project farmers in the province can already plant rice all year long, Defensor said, adding it will boost the chances of the province of becoming a top rice producer in the country.
The 11th Provincial Farmers Congress was organized by the Provincial Agriculture Office in coordination with the local government of Cabatuan as host municipality. The whole day activity featured various speakers who talked about the latest technologies and good agricultural practices that would enhance the productivity of farmers in the province.
