ILOILO – For the second time, the Ulian Watershed in Lambunao town won the coveted Governor’s Prize on Blue Waters, an award for the most sustainable and well-managed watershed. The Ulian Watershed proved that it has the most effective council in terms of using the ridge to reef and ecosystem-based approach in implementing the integrated water resource management. The members of the Ulian Watershed Management Council received the award during a ceremony held in the Conference Hall of Provincial Capitol on Wednesday.
ILOILO – Although it’s been over a year since the monster storm, Italian Ambassador Massimo Roscigno committed to work with Governor Arthur Defensor to ensure the province’s full recovery. Roscigno and Defensor signed a memorandum of agreement on the implementation of P26-million integrated emergency initiative for the survivors of Super Typhoon Yolanda here on Saturday. It is in addition to Italy’s P53-million donation to the Philippines as part of their bilateral cooperation and support to strategic response plan to Yolanda-stricken provinces.
ILOILO – Governor Arthur Defensor Sr. is encouraging all who have been enrolled in Philippine Health Insurance Corp., especially the sponsored poor, to maximize the use of their health insurance benefits. This developed following reports that only 5.61 percent of 378,312 enrollees under the National Household Targeting System and Local Government Unit Sponsored Program availed their insurance.

ILOILO – Forty-eight fishermen onboard 14 motorboats were apprehended for illegal fishing off Tagubanhan Island in Barangay Bagongon, Concepcion on Monday night. The Iloilo Provincial Bantay Dagat Task Force reported that the said fishermen were using active gears in catching shrimp and squid, an act prohibited under Municipal Ordinance No. 01 in 2008. The ordinance banning the use of active gears in municipal waters was passed in support to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources’ Fisheries Administrative Order 201.
ILOILO – Water Missions International, a nonprofit Christian engineering organization, has provided this province with water filtration and purification systems benefiting over 50,000 people in ten municipalities. Vice President of Operations Seth Womble said the water purification systems were installed to provide clean and safe water to survivors of Super Typhoon Haiyan in Bingawan, Batad, Ajuy, Concepcion, San Dionisio, Lemery, Estancia, Balasan and Carles.
