Governor Arthur Defensor, Sr. reiterated his full support to the programs and activities of the cooperatives in the province during his speech at the culminating activity of the 2017 Cooperative Month celebration held at Tigbauan Central Elementary School in Tigbauan, Iloilo on Monday, October 23, 2017.
Defensor, who initiated the creation of the Provincial Cooperative Development Office (PCDO) during his first term as governor in 1993, noted the vital role of the cooperatives in uplifting the living of conditions of its members and the community especially in rural areas.
“Do your best to make your cooperative grow, learn from the best practices of other big and successful cooperatives,” Defensor said.
He also urged the cooperatives to avail of the livelihood loans being offered by different financial institutions including the provincial government through the PCDO.
During the program the province released P8.8 million to 10 cooperatives under the Provincial Livelihood Project Fund (PLPF).
The 10 cooperatives that are recipients of PLPF are: Southern Iloilo Area MPC based in Oton, Iloilo with P1 million loan; Pototan Municipal Employees Credit Cooperative with P1 million loan; Banate Multi-purpose Cooperative with P1 million loan; Catmon Multi-purpose Cooperative based in Sta. Barbara with P1 million; Iloilo State College of Fisheries San Enrique Campus (ISCOF-SEC) MPC with P1 million loan; Pototan Farmers MPC with P1 million; San Miguel Local Government Unit MPC with P1 million loan; Leon National High School MPC with P1 million loan; Northern Iloilo General Services Cooperative MPC based in Balasan with P500,000 loan; and Cabugao Norte (Pavia) MPC with P300,000 loan.
Local officials led by Mayor Suzette Alquisada warmly welcomed the more than 2,000 delegates from the different cooperatives from Iloilo province.
Also present to show support to the cooperative movement were Board Members Val Serag and Renee Valencia, First District Congressman Richard Garin and his wife former Health Secretary Janet Garin, National Cooperative Development Council (NCDC) chair Samie Billanes, Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) regional director Atty. Arnel Agrasada, Provincial Cooperative Development Council (PCDC) chair and PCDO chief Atty. Arturo Cangrejo, among others.
The invited keynote speaker Sen. Cynthia Villar was not able to arrive but she sent a representative.
At the end of the program Mayor Alquisada turned over the Coop flag and Key of Responsibility to the host LGU of next year's Cooperative Month celebration, the Municipality of Bingawan which was received by Mayor Mark Palabrica and Vice Mayor Matt Palabrica.
