One hundred nineteen public schools in 32 municipalities in the province received financial assistance from the Iloilo provincial government through the Provincial School Board (PSB) chaired by Governor Arthur Defensor, Sr. on Wednesday, February 15, 2017.
The financial assistance totalling P33,874,944.73 ranges from P60,000 to P1,000,000 depending on the project proposal submitted by the recipient schools.
PSB secretary Jerry Bionat said the projects include: Repair of school buildings (P16,495,000), Construction of school buildings (P3,909,736), Construction of school facilities such as stage, CR, gymnasium / covered court, perimeter fence, water & drainage systems, slope protection and other school facilities (P12,820,208.73), Procurement of school equipment such as projector, computer set, copier & other school equipment (P670,000).
Gov. Defensor led the distribution of checks to the principals or head teachers of the recipient schools. He was joined by Provincial Administrator Raul Banias, and Board Members Renee Valencia, Emmanuel Gallar, and Liecel Mondejar-Seville.
Defensor said that there are still many pending requests for various school projects in his office. He assured that the requests would be granted as long as the school officials present a program of work and as long as the funds are available.
The governor assured that the Special Education Fund (SEF) of the province is used to help the schools in order to improve the quality of education especially in the countryside.
He noted that the PSB also supported the sports development programs of the DepEd. It gave a financial assistance of P4,785,000 for the Iloilo Schools Sports Council (ISSC) Meet held last December 4-8, 2016. It also allotted P11,268,240 as financial assistance for the province’s delegation to the Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association meet held recently in the province of Antique.
