Governor Arthur Defensor Sr. led the distribution of financial assistance to 23 local government units in the province of Iloilo for the safe closure and rehabilitation of their disposal sites. The turn-over was held in Casa Real on Thursday, June 15, 2017.
The Governor was assisted by OIC Provincial Administrator Dennis Ventilacion and PENRO officer-in-charge Atty. Arturo Cangrejo. Each municipality received the amount of P100,000. The recipients LGUS were: Guimbal, Igbaras, Miag-ao , San Joaquin, Tigbauan, Alimodian, Leganes, Leon, San Miguel, Calinog, Janiuay, Maasin, Anilao, Barotac Nuevo, Dingle, Balasan, Btc. Viejo, Batad, Carles, San Rafael, Estancia, Lemery and San Dionisio.
Before the ceremonial turn-over, the Provincial Solid Waste Management Board (PSWMB) held a meeting wherein they tackled updates from DENR Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) Region 6 and the 2017 Search for Outstanding LGUs on Ecological and Sustainable Solid Waste Management System.
Governor Defensor, who chairs the PSWMB is committed to support the initiatives of LGUs in addressing the garbage problem in order to promote health and environmental protection and ensure the household access to potable water. Last year, 17 LGUs were also given the same financial assistance.
The LGUs are primarily responsible for the implementation and enforcement of the provisions of Republic Act 9003 (RA 9003) or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 within their respective jurisdictions. RA 9003 mandates that the LGUs shall form boards responsible for preparing, submitting and implementing solid waste plans. Gov.
