Oton is a first class municipality in the province of Iloilo, Philippines. According to the 2010 census, it has a population of 82,572..Oton borders Iloilo City.
The Municipality of Oton was organized in 1570 during Legaspi’s administration. How Oton got its name relates back during the Spanish landing in Panay. When they came into the town, they asked in Spanish the name of the place. The natives not knowing the Spanish and thinking that the visitors were asking for the time of the day, answered “ugtong adlaw” meaning noon. The Spanish thought this was the name of the place but since they could not pronounce the syllables “ng” they called it OTON. The boundaries of Oton were determined that time by the natives through a quite, unique but interesting method. On the designated days, the councilors of the town walked toward each other from different starting points agreed upon, the place where they form the boundaries of Oton. For example, when the boundary of Oton and San Miguel were established the councilors from each municipality started walking at the same time from their designated starting points. It was said that San Miguel councilor met some friends drinking tuba and joined them. He got drank and slept while Oton councilor kept on walking. When the San Miguel councilor woke up, he resumed his journey and met the Oton councilor on the creek, a few meters from the town of San Miguel and by then the boundaries of the two towns were established. During the Spanish time, the natives vowed to the Superior force of the Spanish conquistadors but deep in their heart was an overwhelming desire for freedom. The first attempt to counteract the growing influence of Christianity over the people was in 1603. Tapar, after gaining a strong influence over the people of Oton established a new church embodying a modified form of Christian principles. See Tourist Spots
