7 Iloilo Towns Priority of El Niño Aid

ILOILO – Villages in seven towns placed under state of calamity due to El Niño will be the first to avail of the Jetmatic hand pumps from provincial government, according to Governor Arthur Defensor Sr.

About 271 Jetmatic hand pump sets are expected to be distributed to households in severely affected villages in Dueñas, Sta. Barbara, Calinog, Estancia, Dingle, Bingawan and Miagao.

“The distribution will start as soon as the contract is awarded to the most qualified contractor,” announced Defensor in a press conference held at his office on Monday (May 23).

PDRRMC okays placing Iloilo under state of calamity

The Iloilo Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) has approved a resolution recommending to the Sangguniang Panlalawigan that the entire province of Iloilo be placed under a state of calamity due to the onslaught of El Niño phenomenon. Provincial Administrator Raul Banias, upon the instruction of Gov. Arthur Defensor, Sr., convened the PDRRMC for an emergency meeting yesterday (April 14, 2016) to address the adverse effects of El Niño in the province.

Iloilo prepares P233M for El Niño

ILOILO — The provincial government here increases the budgetary requirements needed in its contingency plan for El Niño by P6-million or from initial P226.90-million to P233.07-million. Based on record, the province is expected spend most of this funds to agriculture wherein a total of P94.7-million is allocated to minimize possible damage in crops (P80.6-million), fisheries (P7-million) and livestock (P7-million).

‘Pray for more typhoons’ - Pagasa

ILOILO — An official of the state weather bureau urged the public to prepare themselves for a prolonged El Niño which will likely threaten the economy of the country, especially this rice-producing province. “We need typhoons in the Philippines. Dapat magdasal tayo (we must pray) since a mature strong El Niño is now present in the tropical Pacific Ocean,” said Engr. Oscar Tabada, officer-in-charge of Pagasa-Visayas.
