Defensor wants to be remembered as ‘game changer’

Gov. Arthur Defensor, Sr. takes his oath of office as third-termer governor from Senate President Franklin M. Drilon in the presence of his wife Cosette (5th from right), their children, grandchildren and other family members in a ceremony at the Provincial Capitol lobby on Thursday, June 23, 2016. Drilon also administered Defensor’s oath when he first served as governor of Iloilo in 1992.

“I will continue to pursue the kind of dedication and commitment to public service that I have embraced since I started my political career more than 40 years ago.”

This was the commitment made by Gov. Arthur Defensor, Sr. after he took his oath of office as third-termer governor of the Province of Iloilo on Thursday, June 23, 2016, at the Provincial Capitol lobby.

Senate President Franklin M. Drilon, a long-time friend and ally, administered his oath of office along with other elected officials of Iloilo province.

Defensor said he chose to take his oath for his third and final term as governor before Sen. Drilon because it was also the senator who administered his oath when he first served as governor of the province in 1992.

“This occasion is very meaningful to me,” Defensor said citing his long standing good relationship with the Ilonggo senator.

He vowed to spend his last three years of political life as governor for the improvement of the lives of his constituents and the total development of the province.

“I want to be remembered as a game changer… the governor who changed the social, cultural, political, and economic landscape of the province of Iloilo,” Defensor said.

He also acknowledged the help of Sen. Drilon who brought various infrastructure and developmental projects to the province.

Drilon, for his part, congratulated Defensor for receiving another mandate from the people and for his sterling performance as governor of Iloilo.

He cited the awards obtained by Defensor from various organizations because of his good governance.

Drilon said during the governor’s remaining three years they would be working on the realization of an economic zone in Dumangas port as well as the construction of the P11.2 billion Jalaur River Multi-purpose Project.

Aside from Defensor, Drilon also administered the oaths of Vice Governor Christine Garin and provincial board members Marcelo Valentine Serag and Renee Valencia (First District), Demetrio Sonza (Second District), Lorenz Defensor and Emmanuel Gallar (Third District), Bryant Paul Biron and Domingo Oso (Fourth District), and Nielo Tupas and Jeneda Salcedo-Orendain (Fifth District).

Representatives Arcadio Gorriceta (Second District) and Arthur Defensor, Jr. (Third District) also took their oath before Sen. Drilon.

The senator also administered the oath of Pavia municipal officials led by Mayor Michael B. Gorriceta.

Prior to the oath-taking ceremony a Holy Mass was celebrated by Jaro Archbishop Angel Lagdameo attended by the family members of the elected officials, invited guests as well as provincial government employees.
