Iloilo to release 8,000 bags of certified seeds

ILOILO – Drought-stricken farmers in this province, who are not covered by any insurance, will avail first of certified seeds assistance from the Department of Agriculture starting July 5.

Farmers who are included in the submitted damage reports may also avail of the assistance provided that there are still available buffer stocks after the priority beneficiaries are catered.

Provincial Agriculturist Ildefonso Toledo said Iloilo is expecting over 10,000 bags of certified seeds from DA’s regional office to help farmers affected by El Niño phenomenon.

Of the expected assistance, 8,000 bags of certified seeds will be released starting with 501 bags for Lambunao on Tuesday.

The ceremonial turnover of assistance will start 9:00 AM in front of Lambunao’s Municipal Hall with Provincial Board Member Lorenz Defensor, DA Regional Director Larry Nacionales, Toledo and Mayor Jason Gonzales.

According to the Provincial Agriculture’s Office, El Niño left rice in reproductive and vegetative stages totally damaged in 1,022.33 hectares of farm lands in Lambunao since the last quarter of 2015. The enormous damaged affected 3,543 farmers.

Others were compelled to declare their municipalities under state of calamity. These were Sta. Barbara, Bingawan, Miagao, Dingle, Dueñas, Estancia and Calinog.
