Another batch of persons with disabilities (PWDs) received their customized wheelchairs and mobility devices courtesy of the Latter Day Saints Charities (LDSC) at the provincial capitol lobby on Tuesday, February 6, 2018.
LDSC partnered with the Iloilo provincial government through the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) to distribute wheelchairs and other mobility devices to 600 qualified PWDs in the province. More than 400 wheelchairs were already distributed since 2015.
Hernan Illastron of LDSC said they have chosen Iloilo province to be their project partner because of Gov. Arthur Defensor’s commitment to promote the welfare of the PWDs.
The recent distribution of wheelchairs were witnessed by Gov. Defensor, Vice Gov. Christine Garin, Board Member Liecel Seville, chair of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan committee on Senior Citizens and PWDs and Provincial Administrator Raul Banias.
PSWDO headed by Dr. Neneth Q. Pador facilitated the wheelchair distribution. PSWDO personnel are tasked to identify and assess each recipient of the wheelchair. They also trained the beneficiaries and their family members or caregivers on how to use and take care of their wheelchairs.
Pador said the beneficiaries or their family members are required to undergo community service for a couple of hours in their respective barangays.
It can be noted that the Iloilo province was conferred the 2017 Apolinario Mabini Award for Local Government by the Philippine Foundation for the Rehabilitation of the Disabled (PFRD), Inc. in recognition of its programs and projects for the PWDs.
The successful wheelchair distribution in partnership with LDSC was one of the major programs cited by the PFRD in giving the prestigious award to the province.
