Second District Board Member Demy Sonza, in cooperation with the provincial government’s Office of Culture, Arts, History and Tourism, launched on Tuesday (April 18, 2017) his new book entitled “Two Most Highly Decorated Filipino Soldiers in World War II – Jose C. Calugas and Ramon S. Subejano of Iloilo”. Governor Arthur Defensor along with other provincial officials and Sonza’s family and friends graced the launching ceremony held at Casa Real de Iloilo.
The book is about the heroism and bravery of Calugas who hails from the town of Leon and Subejano who is from New Lucena. Calugas was a member of the Philippine Scout of the US Army during World War II and he received the Medal of Honor for actions during the Battle of Bataan. Subejano, on the other hand, was a decorated US World War II veteran. He has the distinction of earning 17 medals, one of which was the Silver Star which cited him for “Gallantry in Action on December 7, 1944 in the vicinity of Dillingen, Germany.” Sonza noted that the two Ilonggo soldiers maybe unknown here in Iloilo and the entire country but they were very popular in the United States.
Defensor thanked Sonza for letting the public know about the bravery of the two soldiers through his book. He said, Sonza, who has written a number of books on local history, has helped enriched our cultural and historical knowledge.
Sonza donated the said book to the Iloilo provincial government as an act of gratitude to the institution which helped in his personal and professional development. Sonza started as a provincial government employee before he was catapulted to elective positions. The book can be bought at the Office of Culture, Arts, History and Tourism, 3rd floor of the Iloilo Provincial Capitol for P250.00 each.
