Fun, Foodie, Friendly Barangays: Iloilo Develops Grassroots For Tourism

Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Jr. has launched a program that aims to develop the barangay as a community venue for tourism events and activities and as a point of care for tourists, highlighting the fun, foodie, and friendliness of the Ilonggos.

Defensor’s Executive Order 168 Series of 2024 institutes the “Turista sa Barangay for MoRProGRes” which adopts a barangay-based and oriented approach to celebrating the rich culture, culinary heritage, and warm hospitality of Iloilo.

The province will develop the barangays as primary areas of agriculture, food, natural environment, and culture and heritage. The governor outlined a comprehensive program that will explore the hidden gems of barangays, and showcase their activities and attractions, local festivals and culinary offerings.

The ART Center at Barangay Nanga, Pototan shall be developed as a MoRProGRes Tourism Farm with the enhancement of its agricultural facilities and projects. MoRProGRes Gardens will be upgraded and developed within the barangays and municipalities.

A MoRProGRes Tourism Food Hub will be established through the development and enhancement of agricultural products and food processing facilities. A value chain for agricultural products will be created to boost the culinary industry.

A Living Museum of Agriculture / Fisherfolk Tradition will showcase traditional agriculture and way of life, with fishing communities displaying traditional fisherfolk way of life.

The Turista sa Barangay program also involves the improvement of infrastructure and facilities, the conduct of a massive tourism information campaign, capacity-building activities, and the establishment of strong partnerships and engagements with various sectors.

Governor Defensor said he will allot a budget to ensure the success of the program and the realization of its objectives.

“We will funnel our resources and our programs to the barangay so that we will orient it with the tourism development plan of the province,” the governor said.

Defensor said he also wants to work with the Sangguniang Kabataan to make the youth the frontline implementer of the new program. (Capitol News)
