Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. led the groundbreaking of a P20-million Food Hub in Bancal Port in the municipality of Carles, an initiative expected to uplift local agriculture and strengthen food tourism in the province of Iloilo.
This facility aligns with Governor Defensor’s tourism program, “Fun, Foodie, Friendly sa Kabanwahanan,” which highlights the vibrant festivities and rich gastronomy of Iloilo as well as the renowned hospitality of the Ilonggos.
Spanning 500 square meters, the Food Hub will provide small-scale farmers, fisherfolk, and local producers with a dedicated venue to display and sell their goods. It will also feature a restaurant and vendor stalls showcasing Carles’ signature seafood and other agricultural produce.
Bancal Port serves as the primary gateway to Carles’ famous destinations, including the Gigantes Group of Islands and the Sicogon Island. The Food Hub is strategically positioned to elevate visitor experience the moment tourists arrive.
“We want our tourists to be comfortable when they visit our province. We are investing in tourism infrastructure not just for our visitors but also for our local traders and vendors,” Defensor emphasized, noting that the food hub will serve as a sustainable driver for agri-tourism.
Carles Mayor Arnold Betita II expressed his gratitude to the provincial government for establishing a facility that effectively showcases the best of what Carles has to offer.
To ensure its sustainability, Provincial Tourism Officer Aulynn Yue Sin they will provide stakeholders with capacity-building programs, including training in food safety, handling, and product development.
“This will serve as a takeoff point for our tourists. Diri makatipon-tipon ang mga turista while gakaon sang mga manamit nga gina offer diri sa banwa sang Carles. We want to showcase the fun, foodie, friendly side of the province of Iloilo,” Yue Sin said.
Also present during the groundbreaking ceremony are Vice Mayor Earl Patrick Betita, Provincial Administrator Raul Banias, Acting Provincial Engineer Jeb Escarilla, and other provincial and municipal employees.
The provincial government is establishing an initial of three food hubs province-wide to develop value chains in municipalities. The other two hubs will be built in Concepcion and Estancia.
