ILOILO PROVINCE STARTS READING ASSESSMENTS FOR GRADE 3 LEARNERS

The Province of Iloilo through its Education Core Team (EDCORE), in collaboration with DepEd Iloilo, recently conducted pre-assessment tests on Grade 3 learners across the province as part of the Proof of Concept (POC) Initiative.

This initiative, backed by Synergeia, Inc., EDCOM II, and the Regional Education Council (REC), seeks to achieve a significant increase in reading competencies and creative thinking among students.

The pre-assessments will serve as a baseline to measure progress throughout the implementation of the reading resource materials developed by Synergeia, Inc.

The province intends to provide these resource materials to schools as part of its educational support strategy.

A total of 640 learners from 17 schools, including central, elementary, integrated, and primary schools, were assessed for their reading skills in Hiligaynon, Filipino, and English. An additional 653 learners from a control group across 10 other LGUs also underwent pre-assessment.

The tests, administered in schools within pilot LGUs, aim to evaluate the current reading competencies and creative thinking abilities of the students.

Mid and post-assessments are planned to track improvements and determine the effectiveness of the intervention.

Governor Arthur Defensor, Jr. emphasized the importance of reading skills, expressing a commitment to improving literacy among Ilonggo learners.

This effort is intended to provide a model for the effective management of basic education at the local level, potentially informing similar initiatives in other regions.
