Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. underscored the need for an urgent development approach in addressing disasters and other “lingering emergencies” currently faced by the country.
In his speech during the 1st Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Summit on July 31, 2024 at Pototan Astrodome, Defensor cited the institutionalization of the Provincial Civil Defense Service of Iloilo (ProCiD Serv Iloilo) which is a comprehensive and integrated system to address disasters and other emergencies such as climate change, insurgency, criminality, illegal drugs, food security, and even education problems such as classroom shortage and reading proficiency.
ProCid Serv Iloilo also includes collaboration with concerned agencies as well as implementation of laws, plans, and programs in the areas of disaster risk reduction and management, public safety, peace and order, disease control and prevention, climate change response, and environmental crime prevention.
The governor said the best way to address these issues is through development programs that will enhance disaster preparedness, improve response mechanisms, and strengthen community resilience.
“We use our approach in DRRM in working for other concerns and threats that we are facing here in the province of Iloilo and the rest of the country. Moving forward, that is the direction that DRRM is giving us. Urgent development - we develop these areas and we address those problems that usually pertain to the fundamentals,” Defensor said.
Defensor said the same mentality is also being used by the provincial government in working on other areas of governance.
The governor added that his development thrust #MoRProGRes ILOILO (Movement for a Robust, Progressive, Globally Competitive, and Resilient Province of Iloilo) also serves as a machinery of the Bagong Pilipinas campaign of Pres. Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
The 1st Provincial DRRM Summit aims to showcase the latest advancements and resource capabilities of the province of Iloilo in terms of disaster management as well as strengthen communication networks among disaster response teams. (Capitol News)
