Passi City is taking a major step toward smarter and more inclusive solid waste management through the pilot implementation of a Digital Waste Tracking System across 15 rural and urban barangays.
More than improving data collection, this initiative supports a broader shift toward a circular economy – strengthening waste diversion, improving barangay-level planning, and reducing plastic leakage into the environment.
This initiative also complements ongoing Social and Behavior Change Communication (SBCC) efforts by promoting proper segregation, responsible household waste practices, and stronger community participation in solid waste management. The Digital Tracker will also help map the critical contribution of the informal waste sector in waste recovery and recycling, helping create a more connected and inclusive waste management system for Passi City.
This initiative is part of the PH Plastics Circularity Project, implemented by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in the Philippines with support from The Coca-Cola Foundation, and with technical assistance from the Central Philippine University.
It builds on the success of the Project Agubay Solid Waste Management Information Systems, also implemented by CPU, with support from The Coca-Cola Foundation Philippines, demonstrating a scalable approach to digital, data-driven solid waste management.
Initial results of the baseline study were discussed with the Passi City Waste Management Office (CWMO) on May 15, following a Circular Economy Training and Planning Workshop with the pilot barangays in April. The report will be presented to the Passi City Solid Waste Management Board when it convenes on June 2.
