In light of the surge in cases of dengue across the province, the Iloilo Provincial Health Office has issued a crucial appeal to the public to intensify their efforts in searching and eliminating mosquito breeding sites.
Dengue fever, a disease transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, has been on the rise in Iloilo, with the province recently declaring an outbreak after the cases surpassed the alert and epidemic thresholds.
Provincial Health Officer Dr. Maria Socorro Quiñon stressed that apart from cleanup activities, it is important to search and eliminate the breeding grounds where mosquitoes thrive.
She noted that based on their inspection, most of the breeding places in municipalities are found in clogged drainage and those in housing projects.
“Ang search and destruction of breeding places indi na siya madala sa panilhig. Dapat pangitaon gid naton ang breeding sites,” she said.
The PHO chief emphasized the importance of a holistic approach, particularly community participation, in the fight against dengue.
“This concern does not involve the health workers alone. This is a whole-of-society approach. Upod kita tanan sa pagtapna sang dengue. We need the help of the community, of the barangay officials, and the municipal LGUs,” Quiñon said.
The provincial government is strengthening its dengue prevention efforts through intensified monitoring and advocacy sessions in barangays, focusing on the 4S Strategy Kontra Dengue or the search and destroy mosquito breeding sites, secure self-protection, seek early consultation, say yes to fogging and spraying, and sustain hydration.
As of August 10, the province of Iloilo recorded a total of 4,595 dengue cases, including 10 deaths.
