ILOILO BACKS ATHLETES WITH EDUCATIONAL AID CASH INCENTIVES

The Provincial Government of Iloilo strengthened its support for young Ilonggo athletes after distributing educational and financial assistance to more than 50 provincial athletes during a ceremony led by Governor Arthur Defensor Jr.

Each beneficiary received financial assistance of up to P24,000 under the province’s Educational Assistance Program for Iloilo Provincial Athletes, an initiative aimed at helping student-athletes sustain both their athletic training and academic studies.

The distribution activity was spearheaded by Iloilo Sports Development and Management Office (ISDMO) head Dr. Ma. Janelyn Fundal and Senior Sports Development Officer Ray Cabarles.

For many recipients, the assistance eases the burden of transportation, school projects, uniforms, and daily training expenses while allowing them to stay focused on their education and athletic careers.

Governor Defensor said the incentive is meant to motivate Ilonggo athletes to aim higher and strengthen Iloilo’s performance in national competitions, particularly the Palarong Pambansa.

“The goal is to win national. Indi kita maglayo dira,” Defensor said, expressing confidence in the capability of Ilonggo athletes to compete on the national stage.

At the same time, the governor reminded recipients not to neglect their studies despite the demands of training and competition.

“Indi ninyo pagpabayaan ang inyo academics. Importante nga ang aton athletes naga-excel all around,” he added.

Under the provincial government’s assistance program, qualified athletes receive monthly food and transportation allowance amounting to P2,000 for 10 months, along with separate assistance for school supplies, projects, and uniforms.

The program also encourages discipline and accountability among recipients. Student-athletes are required to maintain at least an 80-percent academic average while continuing to perform in recognized regional and national sports competitions. Beneficiaries are also asked to submit training reports, attendance certifications, and video documentation of their daily training.

To qualify for the assistance, athletes must win a gold medal, break a record in recognized regional or national sports competitions sanctioned by the Philippine Sports Commission, DepEd, or other accredited bodies, or be included in the list of athletes identified by the provincial government as Iloilo talents for the current year.

The initiative reflects Iloilo’s continuing investment in grassroots sports development by ensuring that talented athletes are supported not only in competition but also in their education and personal growth.
