The Iloilo Provincial Government will soon welcome a Japanese badminton coach to train local athletes and coaches, thanks to the approval of a request made by the Iloilo Sports Development and Management Office (ISDMO) to the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
JICA representative Lara Javier confirmed the development during a courtesy visit to the province, noting that the agency has greenlighted the ISDMO's proposal and will begin processing the necessary documentation.
"We will start process the necessary requirements to formally open the slot to Japan coaches who are willing to apply for Philippine badminton training camp," Javier said.
The project is part of the technical cooperation program between the Philippine government and JICA, and underscores the Iloilo Provincial Government's commitment to strengthening its sports development initiatives. Under the agreement, JICA will shoulder the board and lodging of the Japanese coach for two years.
Once deployed, the Japanese coach will conduct intensive training programs for both athletes and local coaches in established sports training centers across the province. This strategic investment aims to elevate the quality of badminton coaching and playing in Iloilo, empowering homegrown talents to compete at higher levels.
In a related development, JICA had earlier confirmed that a Japanese football coach will also arrive in Iloilo in January 2026, further enhancing the provinceβs growing sports capabilities.
