DepEd Schools Division Superintendent Ma. Luz de los Reyes presented to Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. the trophies received by Iloilo as overall champion in the recently concluded Western Visayas Regional Athletics Association (WVRAA) last April 26 to 30 held in Aklan.
Joining her are Mr. Nicasio Valenzuela, in charge of the DepEd sports program; Mr. Ray Cabarles, Sports Management Officer IV of the Iloilo Sports Development and Management Office; Ms. Freda Fajardo of the Provincial School Board; and Mr. Harold Sausa, president of the Provincial Parents Teachers Association.
The Iloilo provincial government extended P7.9 million in assistance to the provincial delegates sourced from the Special Education Fund (SEF).
The ISDMO which is managed by the provincial government also provided training for the athletes and technical assistance to coaches under the Center for Sports and Physical Fitness.
The athletes from the province, as well as their coaches and trainers, will also receive cash incentives for receiving gold, silver, and bronze medals under Provincial Ordinance No. 2020-217 sponsored by Vice Gov. Christine Garin and co-sponsored by all the Sangguniang Panlalawigan members.
They will get P5,000 for every gold medal, P3,000 for silver, and P2,000 for bronze.
Iloilo athletes coming from the city and province recorded a total of 229 gold, 154 silver, and 100 bronze medals for both elementary and secondary.
They were also the overall champions in the paragames event.
