The Environmental Program Management Services Division (EPMSD) of PENRO-LGU Iloilo IPG conducted a spot monitoring activity at the Janiuay Public Market on April 23, 2025 to assess its compliance with the Provincial Ordinance No. 2019-193 that regulates single-use plastics and styrofoam in the Province of Iloilo and the enforcement of the Republic Act No. 9147 or the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act.
In coordination with the Janiuay Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) and the Market Supervisor, the monitoring team issued a citation ticket to a stall owner found violating Municipal Ordinance No. 2017-091 for using plastic sando bags for dry goods.
Provincial Ordinance No. 2019-193 also promotes the use of eco-friendly alternatives such as native baskets, eco-bags, and biodegradable materials.
No violations of Republic Act 9147 were observed during the monitoring. As a proactive measure, the PGENRO team provided a copy of RA 9147 to the MENRO and market supervisor to further enhance their understanding and enforcement of regulations governing wildlife selling and trade in the municipality.
The monitoring team was led by EPMSD head Forester Mitzi S. Peñaflorida and comprised of the technical personnel from the Waste Management and Pollution Control Section and deputized Wildlife Enforcement Officers (WEO).
